A crown may be necessary to recover your smile and ensure that there are no additional problems. Your dentist will recommend crowns for cases where <g class=\"gr_ gr_7 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Grammar only-del replaceWithoutSep\" id=\"7\" data-gr-id=\"7\">a filling<\/g> or bonding<g class=\"gr_ gr_14 gr-alert gr_gramm gr_inline_cards gr_run_anim Style multiReplace\" id=\"14\" data-gr-id=\"14\"> would not<\/g> be sufficient for proper restoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Crowns can be made from various materials: porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or a full gold crown.  Porcelain finished crowns are the best choice if wanting to maintain a natural look and feel. These crowns are shade matched with the surrounding teeth which allows them to blend in naturally. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to note that the full process of installing a crown takes 2-3 visits over the course of 2-3 weeks. During the first visit, the tooth will be reshaped by filing down the enamel and making the space for the crown. This procedure will require local anesthetics. After reshaping the tooth, a mold of the tooth and surrounding teeth will be taken and sent to a dental lab for completion of the permanent crown. Until then, your dentist will fit you with a temporary crown.<br><br>The permanent crown takes 2-3 weeks to be returned to your dentist. The second appointment will be to place and fit the permanent crown. During this appointment, local anesthetics are optional and only recommended if there is sensitivity and\/or pain. The crown will be placed using cement. Crowns are durable and will usually last around 10-15 years or longer with proper care.
