Root Canal Therapy

Endodontics focuses on the nerves of the teeth. When a tooth becomes infected, it is usually related to the nerves located in the root of the tooth. In order to treat the infection, a root canal therapy must be performed to removed the nerves. Delaying treatment can turn the infection into an abscess under the root, which is a much more serious problem that includes bone loss in the jaw.

During treatment, the area around the tooth is numbed with a local anesthetic. The dentist will then drill down into the tooth to create an opening into the canal and remove infected tissue. After the infection has been removed, the remaining space is filled with a sealant called gutta percha. It is highly recommended that the tooth is fitted with a crown. A crown will improve the appearance of the tooth and make it more likely that the root canal therapy is successful.

There may be some soreness following the procedure, but that is common for most dental procedures. Root canal therapy can help relieve you from pain caused by the infection and allow you to enjoy all the foods you love without any pain from heat, cold, or biting too hard. If you are experiencing pain, consult your dentist today.
